12 Festive Dwadashi Food Recipes

Dwadashi is the second fasting day in the Hindu calendar. People observe dwadashi fast strictly in northern India and eastern states like Odisha and Bihar. Dwadashi fasting is also observed in other countries that practice Hinduism as well. The word Dwadashi means- the second day and it falls on the 12th lunar day of Krishna Paksha or waxing phase of moon. On this fasting day, Hindus don’t eat any kind of food or drink anything but have fruits, fruits juices, eggs, potatoes and yogurt.
This fasting also known as austerity fast is observed to cleanse body from sins and negative karmas taken during normal days. In some northern Indian communities, people observe strict restrictions on eating and drinking on this day. This fast is a complete ban on not only eating but also drinking any kind of liquids including milk, lemonade etc. Even water can be touched only with gloves or handkerchiefs. It is believed that breaking such a fast leads to bad luck & all kinds of misfortunes follow within few days of breaking such fasts & hence it’s strictly observed by people all over northern India & eastern states as well as other places where Hindu culture has been deeply rooted.

Shahi Tukda

It is a dry sweet dish that is made during this fasting. The recipe of this sweet dish is very easy and simple to make. It is prepared by mixing flour, sugar, ghee, nuts, dried fruits and milk & then deep-frying it in oil until the mixture turns golden brown.
The main ingredients for making tukda are flour, sugar, ghee, nuts and dried fruits (dates or raisins).
In the original recipe of tukda, yogurt also used but in most cases it’s not used as tukda can be made without yogurt as well. For preparing Shahi Tukda you need to mix all the ingredients together except the milk in a bowl or you can even use an electric blender. Once it’s mixed well add the milk little at a time while stirring continuously. Then you should coat each layer with flour and make sure there aren’t any lumps left in the dough. Finally fry it in hot oil until it turns golden brown which takes around 5-7 minutes on high flame or 10-12 minutes on low flame depending on your preference.
Serve this delicacy warm or cold with powdered sugar over them.

Bhatura

Bhatura is a popular Indian flat bread which is made from wheat dough or flour. It is usually stuffed with potato filling and deep fried in oil.
It is also known as the Indian version of samosa that has thinner flaky crust and a softer, chewy inside. Bhatura has been an integral part of many Indian dishes like aloo tikki and bhel puri. One can eat bhatura with any kind of curry. This dish can be served with ghee or butter at lunch or dinner time.
One can also eat bhatura with curd or pickle for breakfast.

Bhujia or Bhugoda Halwa

Bhugoda Halwa is a popular festival sweet dish made with sugar. It’s made of semolina flour and sugar, cream, ghee and cardamom powder. It is a favorite among children, who enjoy it during fasting. Bhugoda Halwa is made in the day of Dwadashi and cooked overnight. This recipe takes patience and time to prepare as it requires cooking for 4 hours or more. The result is worth all the efforts though!

1/2 cup of raw semolina flour
3/4 cup of granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon of ground cardamom
1/2 cup of warm milk
2 tablespoons of warm ghee
6 tablespoons of heavy cream
1/4 teaspoon salt

Aloo Tikiya

Aloo Tikya is a vegetarian dish from the Indian cuisine. It is made with boiled potatoes and spiced with spices. It’s served with a different type of sauce like coconut milk, mint & coriander flavored or green chutney, raita or sweet-potato flour which is fried in oil, milk and sugar.
Aloo tikiyas are very popular as a dish to eat on fasting days in northern India & eastern states where it’s strictly observed by people.

Paneer Shorba or Paneer Soup

Paneer shorba or paneer soup is one of the popular dishes during Dwadashi fasting. People make this dish with yogurt, spices and potatoes in it. This dish is made with a combination of ingredients like cumin, coriander, turmeric, ginger garlic paste, red chili powder and dried fenugreek leaves that are also known as methi dana in Hindi. It’s like a simple vegetable soup with spices and onions boiled along with potatoes.
This dish is often served with rice as well as some other Indian flatbreads like roti or naan. Paneer shorba can be served either hot or cold but most people prefer to have it cold during fasting times.

Yodh Kulfi or Jalebi

Yodh Kulfi is a Nepali dessert that is made using milk and sugar. This dessert is made in multiple ways but all include a mixture of ghee, sugar and dry fruits. The word Yodh means nine in Sanskrit & this delicious dish has nine layers with each layer having different ingredients like dry fruits or nuts.
Jalebi is another delicious dessert which is also made during this fast season. Jalebi is an Indian sweet dish which includes deep fried dough soaked in sugar syrup, dry fruits and nuts. You can also make use of other ingredients like flavored jaggery, cardamom, pistachios, saffron etc to make the yummy appearance of this dessert even more attractive for your guests.
